For the best experience in Kidepo Valley National Park, we recommend visiting during the dry season, specifically from September to March, though the most optimal conditions for wildlife viewing occur between December and February.
Unlike much of Uganda, which experiences two distinct rainy seasons, Kidepo has a single long rainy season from April to August. Because of its semi-arid climate, the park is accessible year-round, but your experience will vary significantly by month
Dry Season: September to March (Best for Wildlife)
Why go: As the landscape dries out, vegetation becomes thinner, making it much easier to spot lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Animals congregate around the remaining permanent water sources in the Narus Valley.
December – February: This is the peak of the dry season. It is very hot (daytime highs can reach 40°C/104°F) and dusty, but wildlife sightings are at their most frequent.
September – November: These months offer a great balance. The rains have subsided, the heat is less intense than in January, and the scenery is still relatively fresh.
Wet Season: April to August
Why go: The park transforms into a lush, vibrant green landscape, which is spectacular for photography. This is also the best time for birdwatching, as migratory birds are present and resident species are active.
